The Lost One

Short film The Lost One. Liselotte Wajstedt creates a tender narrative about her grandmother. She examines a personal history and discovers connections to her own life. The work also reflects several profoundly universal questions and ideas about life. Liselotte Wajstedt sews a white kolt for her grandmother using the sewing machine she inherited from her. Along the hem she has printed a row of images from the grandmother’s life, which are then joined together, piece by piece.

Music: Hanna Nutti

Jorinda’s Journey

Original title: JORINDAS RESA
16 min, fiction

The film takes place in a magnificent landscape with high mountains. During her journey Jorinda meets resistance in the guise of a snow storm and she is almost frozen to death. But the real enemy is within Jorinda herself. She has to find her own inner strength. She has to take charge of her life. The project was inspired by Ann-Marie Ljungberg’s book Resan till Kautokeino (The Journey to Kautokeino).

Jorinda’s Journey is a feminist film in which I want to give a young girl a voice!

My inspiration: Butoh dance and Sami joik
Butoh and the Sami joik hold a great deal in common, despite the geographical distance and cultural difference between them. You don’t dance a dance about something nor do you joik about something. Both in butoh and the joik you step closer to the theme, allowing it to fill you, just dancing it, emptying your ego and allowing whatever you want to express to fill you. You dance something, e.g. a tree, or a form or an emotion.

”Butoh means ‘Step in a ritual’, Butoh are the screams never screamed, The untrodden paths”.

A joik has a circular form. You don’t joik about something, you joik it. You empty yourself, allowing whatever you want to joik to fill you. You dedicate the joik to a person or a place. You joik to remember. You can also joik a longing

I’m in Lavvu ‘4,56 min
An art installation that will require a separate darkened room.
The music is made by: Mathias Josefson

I’m in Lavvu.

I carry with me my Lavvu of sunbeams wherever I am: The Sami are the children of the sun, the sunbeams symbolize the four corners of the world. For several generations behind me are those women of my family who have lived in a lavvu. It is not possible for me as an urban Same.
Symbolically, the Lavvu is still there as the “safe home” and my ancestors live within me as long as I remember them. I can always carry my light-lavvu with me as a quiet retreat.

The Sami and her Body

Length of work (min:sec): 4.52 min

Synopsis of work:
I investigate the body as a tool, a house, flesh. I learn what the different parts of my body are called in sami language.
I do this in my home. Me in my body among my things that I identify with. I try out my different sami attributes on my body: like the kolt (traditional dress), the belt, the shoes, the jewellery.
”You are only at home in your self” – a little being said to me. If I feel good in my body, then I feel good anywhere.

The City Sami in the Woods

Length of work (min:sec): 4.40 min

Synopsis of work:
I want to learn more about the forest in a sami way. I bring along a blanket, some coffee and a sandwich and I go to the forest. I´m thinking about the sami nature creatures from the old mythology and at the same time I am learning new words in sami. I bring with me a pen. I´m writing the sami words on a tree, a rock, soil, roots. The leaves are burning in autumn colours, I make this film when the forest is at its most beautiful state.

Sami nieida jojk

Sámi nieida jojk is a documentary roadmovie into Sápmi. Armed in a Kolt and with a summer’s course in the lingo she is determined to take her place among the people she belongs to. In spite of being Sami herself, she has stood outside the Sami community, bereft of the language and other attributes of the culture. It’s an exciting trip, filled with expectations of new and fulfilling experiences, but the hovering fear of rejection and alienation lurks around the corner. This strong story is portrayed through humoristic documentary narration, imaginative animation and musical editing. How much a Sami can you be living in the city and without reindeers? Will she be accepted in Sameland?

I use the samish traditional dress in different hypothetical situations and contexts. How will it be to wear it, will I find it comfortable? This movie is a part of a jojk, it is my jojk without the singing. The jojk is traditionally used to remember or dedicate something to something or someone.
A jojk, can be about longing. I have been denied to be a sami, my language has been taken away, aswell as my traditional costume and my culture. I want to recapture lost knowledge and culture.
